Skies of arcadia dreamcast discs1/16/2024 ![]() ![]() The game featured beautiful locales and detailed polygonal characters that could be fully appreciated behind a close third person camera. Skies of Arcadia looked like a proper 3-D RPG of the time too. ![]() ![]() Vyse, Fina, and Aika were a likable cast, and even the collection of villains that made periodical appearances throughout the game’s run time were entertaining to read. The entire quest was one which took place in a sky populated by floating islands and continents. However, as a game very few RPGs from the era (or any era) gave the epic sense of adventuring into the unknown as well as Skies of Arcadia did. This was because Sega was struggling from the losses incurred by Shenmue’s development and marketing campaign among its many other financial woes brought upon by previous hardware blunders. Much like other Sega RPGs from the era such as Panzer Dragoon Saga, Skies of Arcadia did not receive a full marketing push. Skies of Arcadia the Greatest JRPG of the 2000s? Skies of Arcadia is one of the finest JRPGs ever made, and now, it is also one of the priciest on Amazon.įrom 2000 to 2010 only Chrono Cross (94 average score) and Final Fantasy IX (94 average score) scored higher than Skies of Arcadia (93 average score) with critics. However, purchasing a working copy (with case and booklets) of Skies of Arcadia remains a considerable investment in both of its versions. Phantasy Star Online - Dreamcast VS Gamecube: Īs emulation goes, Dreamcast emulators (Flycast or Redream) and Gamecube emulators (Dolphin) run pretty good on android devices, as long your phone can handle them.īut yeah, my initial opinion still stands: I'd still get the gamecube ports if I were you because they feel more the "definitive" versions of these games. The Dreamcast’s greatest Japanese role-playing game, and perhaps the best JRPG of the 2000s, is not as costly as other entries on this weekly series. Skies of Arcadia - Dreamcast VS Gamecube: There are these videos I found on youtube comparing both versions side by side. I'm just mentioning this Adventure versus Adventure DX dilemma because maybe this kind of stuff also happens for Phantasy Star Online and Skies of Arcadia. Not to mention, the DX version has a new mode called "Mission Mode" which's not present on the original for the Dreamcast, and I think Metal Sonic is only available as a playable character on DX version as well. More info about this can be found in this video: More noticable, the Dreamcast version has better lighting, better textures and some people prefer the Dreamcast character models instead of the DX models, which are very different. Some people prefer to play the Dreamcast version because there are things on the Dreamcast version not present on the DX. So bottom line: get the GameCube ports, unless you really want to play the Dreamcast version for some reason.Īlso, this reminded me of that old dilemma of playing what version of Sonic Adventure, the original on Dreamcast or the DX version on GameCube. Skyes of Arcadia Legends, which's the name of the gamecube port, seems to have extra content that's missing from the dreamcast version as well, and if I'm not mistaken the gamecube version is only 1 disc instead of being in 2 discs like the Dreamcast version. However, I've decided to play the Dreamcast version because I always played this version of Phantasy Star Online back in the day I had access to a Dreamcast so that's the version I want to play, while well aware that the GameCube is more of a complete experience because it has more content. Gamecube also contains Episode 3 as another game called "Phantasy Star Online Episode III: CARD Revolution", which means you have the full Phantasy Star Online experience only on GameCube. GameCube's version of Phantasy Star Online is called "Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II", which means it contains episode 2, while the Dreamcast version only contains episode 1.
